Compost topdressing
Spreads a thin, even layer of certified compost across the turf, raising soil organic matter so the ground holds water instead of shedding it.
The problem it solves
The lawn dries out fast, needs constant watering to stay green, and never seems to build a proper root system no matter what gets put on it.
What actually happens
A thin, even layer of certified compost is spread across the whole turf surface and worked in — typically a quarter to a half inch, which is enough to matter and not so much that it smothers the grass. Following aeration, a large share of that compost falls into the open holes and gets carried down into the root zone rather than sitting on top.
Why it matters here
Soil organic matter is what holds water and feeds soil biology. Most established Triangle lawns test low on it, and most new-construction lots test very low, because grading stripped the topsoil off before the sod went down. Raising organic matter is a physical change to the soil that persists; a fertilizer application is gone in weeks.
When it should happen
Fall alongside aeration and overseeding is the strongest combination. A spring application also works, particularly on lawns being brought back from a hard summer.
